Mark Hensby was a late addition to the field in this week’s Palmetto Championships. He also withdrew early after adding 10 penalties to the opening round score.
The 49-year-old Australian, who was trying to make his first PGA Tour in five years, was finished with his first eight holes on Thursday at Congaree when he noticed something strange with his golf ball. Titleist ProV1 had an unfamiliar little spot on it.
The can asked, ‘What is this point on the ball? I’ve never noticed this before; Did they do something with the new V1 pro version? And he didn’t know, so I asked my playing partners, and they were saying, ‘This is a low spin ball.’ Now I don’t use this ball, so there was a lot of confusion where it came from—none of the others had a point—but we knew. I played the wrong ball.”
Hinsby, who thought he started playing the wrong ball after putting his third shot into the water on the fourth hole, was then thrown two hits for each hole he played with the wrong ball. Consistent with the domestic model of the base G-4, Hensby was penalized 10 shots in total.
He would have played the last 10 holes on 1 to card 13 on 84.
“After I got the penalty, it was tough from that moment on, and it was a shame because I knew my tournament was over,” said Hensby, who didn’t arrive until Friday after pulling out of the event. He told PGATour.com he felt stiff after driving a moving truck from Scottsdale, Arizona, to San Antonio, a 14-hour trip, last Sunday.

In regards to how Hensby got into the Titleist stray ball, it was later determined that he and Pat Perez mistakenly switched balls while hitting the green before the round.
“Somehow I caught one of Pat’s balls and he ended up with one of my balls,” Hensby said. “I only discovered this because the Titleist wanted to get to the bottom of it. I thought they had the wrong ball in the sleeve I had. It’s hard to tell the difference if you look at both balls. Not like one black and one red. Both are black, but one has a small dot, The other is not.
“Unfortunately, I didn’t notice it. I’m glad he didn’t use mine.”
