A Florida man was swept into the sea while trying to save a father and young son from drowning near South Tampa Beach, according to local reports.
The WFLA reports that “Apollo Beach Hero” Christophe Murray, 27, has not been found after his failed attempt to rescue the parent and toddler, who drowned Friday.
Police said Murray’s girlfriend called 911 as the current swept the trio away.
“I could not be more grateful for his heroic actions. Unfortunately, the current was so strong that he was unable to attempt any rescue efforts either as good or as pure as his intentions,” Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Kronister said, according to the Women’s Football Association.
The identity of the father and the boy, who are believed to be around 3 years old, has not been identified.
“When you have clearly marked ‘no swimming’ areas, it’s for a reason,” Kronister said. “I ask every parent not to put a baby near any kind of moving or open water without a life jacket on.”
