Doctor says Christian Eriksen had a heart attack: ‘It’s gone’

Denmark’s team doctor said Christian Eriksen went into cardiac arrest during a Euro 2020 match on Saturday and was “gone” before treatment on the field saved him.

Doctor Morten Possen led work in Eriksen’s cardiopulmonary resuscitation after he collapsed during the European Championship match against Finland.

“It was gone. We did CPR. It was cardiac arrest,” Buzyn said in a video conference with reporters. “How close are we? I do not know. We brought it back after one flaw. That’s too fast. “

It wasn’t clear why Eriksen collapsed just before the break, and Buzyn, stating he’s not a cardiologist, declined to speculate in any way.

Eriksen remains in hospital in Copenhagen in stable condition, but Denmark’s coach, Kasper Hjolmand, said he spoke to Eriksen via video chat. “It was good to see him smile,” said the coach.

‘He said, ‘I don’t remember much but I am more concerned about you guys; How are you doing? “This is a typical Christian.”

The decision to resume the game was heavily criticized in Denmark, including from former members of the team. Former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, father of current player Kaspar Schmeichel, described it as “ridiculous” to continue the match under these conditions.

But Hjulmand said the team agreed to play rather than accept an option they saw as worse: go home, come back on Sunday and try to complete the game.

Hjolmand said his players are now determined to get back on the field. Denmark are set to face Belgium in Copenhagen on Thursday, and coach Eriksen said he “would like us to play”.

He also said that the Danish players will return to training on Monday.

“We are trying to get back to normal life tomorrow,” Hjolmand said. “This is very much in line with what psychologists are saying, and the way I want to try to lead this group forward.”
