WINDSOR, England (AFP) – President Joe Biden and his aviator sunglasses met Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday afternoon.
The Queen hosted President and First Lady Jill Biden at Windsor Castle, her royal residence near London. Biden traveled to London after wrapping up his participation in a three-day summit of the leaders of the world’s wealthy democracies in Cornwall, in southwest England. He arrived at the castle on the presidential helicopter and was flown to the Queen in a black Range Rover.
The 95-year-old greeted the Bidens in the castle grounds, where they waited under a covered platform that shielded them from the sun. Assembled soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the Grenadier Guards of the Queen’s Company gave a royal salute and the Bidens put their hands above their hearts as the United States national anthem was played.

Next, the chief was caught below a row of soldiers standing on the lawn. He had a stern expression on his face after he removed his trademark sunglasses, but when the 78-year-old Biden reached the end of the line, he smiled at the soldier in front of him who carried a sword. The Queen and Jill Biden remained on the podium.
Then the Bidens headed inside for tea with the Queen.
Biden is the thirteenth US president to meet with the king. During the Queen’s nearly 70-year reign, President Lyndon Johnson was the only one who did not identify her while in office.

She has received four other US presidents at Windsor Castle, where she has been in isolation during the coronavirus pandemic. They are Donald Trump in 2018, Barack Obama in 2016, George W. Bush in 2008, and Ronald Reagan in 1982.
Biden first met the Queen in November 1982, when he traveled as a senator to the United Kingdom for a meeting of the British-American parliamentary group, the White House said on Sunday. Biden was part of a group that met the king during that visit.
The Queen has been recovering from the pandemic at Windsor Castle, but she has also started to occasionally go out after the death, in April, of her husband, Prince Philip, at the age of 99.
On Friday, she joined other members of the royal family, including Prince Charles and Prince William and their wives, at a reception in Cornwall for the leaders of the Group of Seven.
