RIdgeland (AFP) – Jaric Hugo won the Palmetto Championships in the Congaree to claim his first win in the PGA TOUR Sunday when leader Chaison Hadley lost a lead by two bullets in his last three holes.

The 22-year-old South African shot 3-under 68 and finished 11th in his second career at the PGA TOUR event. Get ready to see more of it. The win, along with $1,314,000, gives him PGA TOUR status during the 2022-2023 season.

“It’s amazing,” Hugo said. “I’ve been patient all week.”

It was a heartbreaking end for Hadley, apparently controlling for 13 under three holes to play. But he drove in a waste area on the 16th and was unable to get up and down after he missed the 17th and 18th greens to give up victory.

Hadley said, “I can only imagine what it looked like on TV because it looked terrifying from my point of view. I mean, I could barely keep it on this planet.”

Hadley finished with a score of 75 after opening 65-66-68. He fell in a tie for the second at the age of ten with Hudson Swafford (66), Doc Redman (67), Jonathan Vegas (67), Terrell Hutton (68) and Bo Van Pelt (68).

After the equal nine up front, Hugo had a twelfth-ranked vulture eagle and a fourteenth bird to reach 11 under—two shots in the back of Hadley.

Higgo also saved the equaliser from a distance of 10 feet on the 71st hole after missing the fairway with the first two shots.

When Higgo went into a tie at 18, he headed to wait for a potential playoff. Turns out he didn’t need the extra reps because Hadley missed 10 feet to give the young rookie his first win.

Hugo took off his sunglasses and grinned as he told his victory, then hugged the case to celebrate.

Top seed Dustin Johnson made the move to the top late in the round, coming after Hadley’s shot past the sparrows on holes 10, 12 and 13. His chances ended with a triple bogey on the 16th hole and finished with a score of 70 to tie for 10th.

Van Pelt made a flyer in the 15th to 12th under, then put it right back with a bogey for 16th.

Swafford is close to playing next week in the US Open. Winning at Congaree Golf Club would have meant a cross-country trip to Torrey Pines. He, too, came close and was two goals ahead before finishing in a tie for fourth place.

She took the tournament in the Congaree for the RBC Canadian Open, which has been canceled for the second year in a row due to COVID-19.

The race culminated in an unprecedented extension of golf in the Palmetto State.

It started in April with Stewart Cink winning his third RBC Heritage title at Harbor Town Golf Links and continued last month with 50-year-old Phil Mickelson becoming the oldest major winner of a PGA Championship on Kiawah Island.
