Critics express admiration for Kamala Harris’ answers on her trip to Mexico, Guatemala

Vice President Harris appears to have no answer to questions about a possible visit to the US-Mexico border — and critics question why.

Harris’s first international trip as vice president to Guatemala and Mexico came with criticism for his telling immigrants to “don’t come” to the United States.

But on Sunday the CNN panel focused on some awkward conversations with members of the press when asked if she plans to visit the border.

“It’s a little sad,” presenter Abby Philip said on Inside Politics Sunday.

“And I know her allies in the White House and elsewhere are watching it and kind of wondering, ‘What’s going on? “

The panel was reacting to two specific segments, the first being an attention-grabbing interview when NBC’s Lester Holt indicated it didn’t go to the border.

“And I didn’t go to Europe,” she said with a laugh.

“I mean, I don’t understand the point you are making. I don’t discount the importance of boundaries.”

Harris – the key person in the Biden administration on the border issue – was also asked about a visit amid the migrant crisis during a Univision interview on Thursday. The Vice President replied that she was going before reporter Elijah Calderon entered and asked for details.

Vice President Kamala Harris boards Air Force One from Benito Juarez International Airport.

“When are you going to the border, Vice President?” Calderon asked.

“I’m not done,” Harris replied before moving forward that management is focusing on the root causes of the problem.

At Sunday’s hearing, The Washington Post’s Olivier Knox said there was debate if the visit had any “meaningful political purpose” — but either way, Harris should have known questions were coming.

“To be clear, this question would have been asked of her, and the fact that they had nothing better than ‘I didn’t go to Europe’ is somewhat noteworthy,” Knox said.

“Republicans have been bombing this issue for weeks and months.”

Committee member Laura Barron-Lopez said the trip “certainly didn’t go the way the White House wanted” but added that she didn’t think it would have long-term effects if Harris sought reelection in 2024 or 2028.

But other members have argued that the vice president has been heavily criticized for immigration, in part, because she is a black woman.

“Race is the No. 1 issue for Republicans right now,” said committee member John Harwood.

“This is a white party that mobilizes aggrieved white Americans who feel they are losing control of their country.”

The newspaper previously reported that more than 929,000 people have been arrested at the border since October 1, based on data from Customs and Border Protection. The U.S. has been on the cusp of most people stopping at the U.S. southern border since 2000, when 1.64 million people were arrested.
