A 3.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in and around Angol on Saturday evening, causing panic among the people.

Residents of Angoll, Shindepada, Kanha, and Talcher experienced mild shaking as windows vibrated. They immediately rushed out of their homes. However, no damage was reported.

It is worth noting that an earthquake of low intensity rocked Angoll and Talcher on August 27, 2019. The frequent tremors in and around Angoll Talcher mines area became a source of concern among the people. The surrounding Precambrian Shield ranges within the state of Odisha. According to the map of the Indian seismic zone, a large part of the state is located in the second zone. However, a lively strip that includes the urban areas of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Anjul, Talcher, Sambalpur, Dhankanal and part of Baliswar district is placed in the third district. This basically means that the Talchir Basin is in the same seismic zone as Latur, Ahmedabad and Jabalpur and that the basin with its thick sediment cover faces the risk of earthquakes.

According to some researchers, mining accounts for the largest number of human-caused earthquakes worldwide (many earthquakes clustered around 271 sites).

Removal of minerals from the ground can lead to instability, resulting in sudden collapses that lead to earthquakes. “Without assessing the negative impact of mining in the Angul-Talcher seismic zone, the government is allowing an additional 12 coal mines for commercial mining in this area,” said Rabindra Prasad Patanaik, chair of the Angul Citizens Action Forum.
