With a mandatory small camp for the Minnesota Vikings coming this week, there has been a great deal of speculation as to whether or not star defensive end Daniel Hunter will attend. Hunter is said to be unhappy with his current contract despite the fact that he still has three years left of the extension he signed two years ago.
If this report is accurate, it looks like No. 99 will be in the center of orthopedic performance in the Twin Cities this week.

James Jones of the NFL Network. . . And, yes, because it’s early morning, you can eat this with as many grains of salt as you deem necessary. . . It is reported that Hunter will be present at camp this week.
Hunter signed a five-year, $72 million extension with the Vikings in 2018, receiving a Second-Team All-Pro honor that year. He followed that up by being named the first All-Pro team in 2019, but missed the entirety of last season with a neck injury. Mike Zimmer initially described the injury as a “modification,” but after Hunter underwent surgery, the team put him into the injured reserve in early September.
Both sides have at least a little leverage in this position. On the one hand, the Vikings’ passing rush was absolutely horrible last season without the catcher anchoring their offensive line, compared to the others. . And frankly less. . .edge rushers, it looks like he’s getting paid a lot less at this point. On the other hand, having missed an entire season due to an injury you can’t mess with too much, it’s hard to justify giving him more money so he’s back and producing again.
Hopefully with Hunter in the little camp for this week, the two sides can come together and work on something to keep Number 99 in purple for the long term. We’ll see how things develop this week as the team gets together for the last time before the start of training camp in late July.
