President Biden prepares to confront Putin The Ukrainian president thanks the G7 nations for a statement of support that Biden aims to bolster troubled Turkish relations in his first meeting with Erdogan. Former President Donald Trump prepares to confront Putin, and Biden aims to bolster troubled Turkish relations in Erdogan’s first meeting in the Senate investigation into the insurgency. The United States was a passing phase in the nation’s history.
His response came at a NATO news conference on Monday where he was asked how he was able to reassure allies that the United States would be a reliable and stable partner moving forward, especially given the January 6 violence and Trump’s continued hold on the Republican Party. .
The President has repeatedly emphasized at the G-7 and NATO Summits that now is a critical time for democracies around the world.
“The leaders that I’m dealing with in NATO and the G7 are leaders who know our recent history, who generally know the character of the American people, and who know where the vast overall center stands,” Biden said. “We are a respectable and honorable nation. And I think they saw things happen that, as we did, shocked them and surprised them with what could have happened. But I think they, like me – the American people are not going to maintain that kind of behavior.”
“The Republican Party is dwindling dramatically in number. The leadership of the Republican Party is divided. The Trump wing of the party is the largest part of the party,” Biden added. But they constitute a significant minority of the American people.”
Biden launched into an extended debate about the state of the Republican Party in American politics, arguing that it is necessary to succeed in defeating the pandemic and revitalizing the economy to restore confidence in government, especially among young Republicans.
“I think it’s a shock and a surprise that what happened regarding President Trump’s pseudo-populism results has happened. It is disappointing that many of my fellow Republicans in the Senate, whom I know so well, have been reluctant to accept the overwhelming disapproval of the Senate,” Biden said Republicans to support an investigation into the Jan. 6 riots, in which law enforcement was overwhelmed by a pro-Trump mob, and sent lawmakers to seek safety in an effort to stop Congress from counting the Electoral College votes confirming Biden’s victory.
“But ultimately, we’ve gone through periods like this in American history before, where there was this reluctance to take the opportunity to be reelected because of the nature of your party’s politics right now,” the president added. “I think this is a pass – I don’t mean an easy pass. That’s why it’s so important that I succeed in my agenda.”
Biden made it a point to highlight the return of American leadership to the world stage during his first foreign trip as president. He stated after the G7 that “America is back to the negotiating table,” and described NATO’s common defense clause as a “sacred obligation.”
The comments, and Biden’s broader efforts to bring the United States back to the forefront of international alliances, come after four years in which Trump has promoted an “America First” agenda while repeatedly punishing allies, including NATO allies and the Group of Seven.
Despite initial condemnations from Republicans for his role in the January 6 violence, Trump has maintained his grip on the Republican Party since leaving office, even as he continues to make unfounded allegations about election fraud.
