Attorney General Merrick Garland said federal authorities have now arrested more than 480 people in connection with the January 6 deadly attack on the US Capitol.

Garland described the attack by Donald Trump supporters seeking to reverse his electoral defeat at the hands of Joe Biden as a “major and outrageous attack.”
Trump was impeached a second time, accused of inciting rebellion, but was acquitted when not enough Republican senators were persuaded to vote in favor of his conviction.
Then the Republicans used stalling, the means by which the Senate minority could block the will of the majority, to thwart legislation to create an independent 9/11-style commission to investigate the attack.
“We have an enormous task ahead of us,” Garland said at the Washington Department of Justice, during a speech on domestic terrorism policy.
This means that the United States must “move forward as a country, punish the perpetrators, do everything in our power to prevent similar attacks, and do so in a way that affirms the values that underpin our justice system and on which our democracy depends,” he said.
“The determination and dedication with which the Department of Justice handled the investigation into the January 6 attack reflects the seriousness with which we take this attack on the mainstay of our democratic system, the peaceful transfer of power.
“In the 160 days since the attack, we have arrested more than 480 people and brought hundreds and hundreds of charges against those who attacked law enforcement officers, obstructed justice, and used deadly and dangerous weapons to achieve these ends.
“This would not have been possible without the dedication of our attorneys general and agents, as well as the critical cooperation of ordinary Americans who, big and small, have shown themselves to be our best partners in keeping America safe. Within the first week after the attack, members of the public took it upon themselves to deliver more than 100,000 piece of digital media to the FBI.”
