Representatives from the group of Texas Democratic lawmakers who prevented a Republican-backed voting restrictions bill from becoming state law at the eleventh hour met for more than an hour with staff of Senator Joe Manchin on Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the meeting.

Texas Representatives Trey Martinez Fisher and Jasmine Crockett met with West Virginia Democratic chief of staff Lance West, Legislative Director Wes Congel and Chief Counsel Kevin Carson Tuesday afternoon on behalf of the caucus, the source, who requested anonymity. private meeting, he told NBC News. Two other Texans who were also planning to join, were unable to attend, though the reason was not immediately clear.

Texas lawmakers are in Washington to press for federal voting legislation and are scheduled to meet with several Democratic lawmakers in the Senate on Tuesday. On Wednesday, they will meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, who is leading the Biden administration’s efforts to protect voting rights.

Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, speaking with reporters as lawmakers gather in Texas, criticized the bill, known as the “Act for the People,” as an attempt to boost Democrats’ chances in elections.

“Think of this as exactly what it is, a partisan effort by the majority to take over at the federal level how we conduct all US elections,” he said. “Not surprisingly, not a single Republican will support it.”

Manchin said he would not support legislation currently being considered by Congress and called for a bipartisan agreement on any action to change the vote that becomes law.

Manchin has emerged as a major figure when it comes to voting legislation. The Democrats were unable to secure any Republican support for their actions, which would place advanced restrictions on the Republican Party in states such as Texas and Georgia.

To pass the bill in its current form, Democrats will need Manchin to agree to amend the Senate’s stall rules. Still opposed to eliminating procrastination.

Manchin said he supports the John Lewis Voting Rights Development Act, a narrower voting bill.

Lawmakers intend to argue that the John Lewis Voting Rights Promotion Act is important but is “not a substitute” for a Act for the People, according to the legislators’ prepared talking points.
