Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Tuesday that his office will solicit public donations to provide funding for the state’s planned border wall.
Abbott said he plans to provide more details about the wall project later this week. The Texas governor has unveiled a series of measures in recent days aimed at curbing an immigrant crisis that has strained capacity at immigration facilities near the southern border.
“I will also provide a link that you can click and go to, for everyone in the United States, everyone in the whole world who wants to help Texas build a border wall, there will be a place there where they can contribute,” Abbott said during his appearance on the conservative podcast Ruthless.
“They’re going to a trust in Texas – not a private entity, not an individual,” he added. “The state of Texas will have them in the governor’s office, great transparency, and everyone will know every penny that goes in, every penny that goes out. But the only purpose of that money is to build the border wall.”

Abbott first revealed plans for the border wall at a large-scale press conference last week. The governor also created a task force to lead the state’s response to the border crisis and approved a state legislature budget that included nearly $1 billion in funding for border security measures.
The governor and other prominent Republicans have argued that the Biden administration’s immigration policies, such as the repeal of the Trump administration’s immigrant protection protocols, also known as the “stay in Mexico” policy, led to the immigration crisis. Biden officials argued that the president inherited a broken system and worked to undo the inhumane policies.
Abbott noted that the crisis has led to unsafe conditions for Texans who live near the border.

“It’s a third world country where these farmers and ranchers live, and their lives are on the line every day,” Abbott said of the situation at the border. “And you know what? The Biden administration doesn’t care much about these people going through this tragedy. Someone has to come forward for these people.”
Abbott has yet to provide details on what he expects the border wall will cost him. In January, President Biden issued an executive order suspending federal funding for the Trump-era wall along the southern border.
The Government Accountability Office said Tuesday that Biden’s executive order does not violate federal budget laws.
