The Israel Defense Forces launched a counterattack on Gaza after a balloon attack spread incendiary devices in southern Israel.

The counter-strike, which took place Tuesday evening in the United States and early Wednesday local time, targeted military compounds belonging to Hamas, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The targets were used by Hamas in Khan Yunis and the Gaza Brigades for “terror activities,” according to the IDF.

“The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible for all the events taking place in the Gaza Strip and will bear the consequences of its actions,” the army said in a statement. “The IDF is prepared for any scenario, including the resumption of hostilities, in the face of the continuing terrorist activities from the Gaza Strip.”

Authorities on both sides said there were no casualties, The Times of Israel reported.

The violence comes just three weeks after a ceasefire halted 11 days of fighting that marked the worst clashes between the IDF and Hamas fighters since a small war in 2014.

The balloon attacks ignited nearly twenty fires.
