The airline said hundreds of Southwest Airlines flights have been canceled in the past 24 hours due to a series of technical issues, leaving passengers dazed at airports across the country. By Tuesday afternoon, the last onshore station had been lifted and Southwest said it was “in the process of resuming normal operations”.

The airline said the airline grounded planes for the first time on Monday night after a third-party weather data provider experienced “intermittent performance issues” that prevented it from transmitting data needed to fly safely.

“While Southwest Teams and the supplier have worked to restore contact, we have implemented a ground station to protect the safety of our crews and customers,” Southwest added.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, Southwest delayed more than 1,500 flights on Monday and canceled 45. Passengers documented the ground stop on social media, tweeting photos of planes waiting on runways and sharing stories of disembarking from planes that had already pulled off the plane. Gate.

“Two hours on board from boarding. About another hour waiting at the gate to clear everyone and get back on the plane,” one passenger wrote of his experience in a tweet.

The case appears to have been resolved on Monday. But the airline faced another setback on Tuesday, when it asked the Federal Aviation Administration to issue a ground hold due to another disturbance.

In a new statement, Southwest said a “short layoff” in flight activity resulted from “intermittent performance issues with our network connectivity on Tuesday afternoon.” The FAA said in its own statement that Southwest was experiencing a “computer reservation issue”.

The airline also said it has “proactively canceled” nearly 500 flights due to the outage, and is working with customers to get them to their destinations. According to Flight Aware, an additional 1,200 flights were postponed on Tuesday. Passengers documented the chaos created in some cities, sharing photos of crowded airports and offers of flight arrivals riddled with delays.

This is not the first time that technical issues have caused flight delays and cancellations. Just last month, Saber’s flight reservation system failed, causing delays at JetBlue and other airlines around the world. When the Government Accountability Office studied these types of technical disruptions to airlines between 2015 and 2017, they discovered that they occurred more than once a month.
