The United States is probably claiming the hottest place on Earth as heat tightens its grip on over 100 million

On Tuesday, California’s Death Valley temperature soared to 124 degrees making it not only the hottest region in the United States but also potentially one of the hottest locations, if not the hottest, in the world.

And Wednesday, it was only expected to get hotter, with Death Valley expected to warm up to 128 degrees.

With temperatures 10 to 30 degrees above average, dozens of records were torn down Tuesday across Wyoming, Utah, South Dakota, Nevada, Arizona and southern California. Casper, Wyoming, broke his previous record of 93 a perfect score of 9. Several other western cities have experienced similar, even more extreme, events: Billings, Montana, beat its old record by 10 degrees (new record: 108), and Chula Vista, California, broke its record by a full 13 degrees (new record: 89) ).

All-time records were set Tuesday in Billings at 108 degrees, Salt Lake City at 107 and Cheyenne, Wyoming, at 94. New June hottest records were set in other parts of Utah, where temperatures soared. above 105.

On Wednesday, the spreading sweltering heat continued to engulf the nearly 40 million people who found themselves under heat warnings, watches and warnings.

With the heatwave not expected to subside until next week, more than 200 records warm could drop, including afternoon record highs and restless nightly lows.

By the time all is said and done, 110 million Americans will have experienced scores above 90 degrees, and more than 20 million above 100 degrees.

Concerns are growing as high temperatures, low humidity and high winds intertwine to produce ideal wildfire conditions.

Massive amounts of evaporation from major reservoirs, lakes, and rivers caused by the intense heat have dwindled water and energy supplies, prompting power grid operators in many states to plead with residents to reduce their consumption.

Meteorologists are urging everyone under heat alerts to stay indoors, seek shade, drink water, and check on neighbors who may need relief from the dangerous heat.

Extreme heat has one of the strongest associations with higher temperatures due to climate change. Heat waves last longer and become more intense, and wildfire seasons across the West see an increase in acres of burning.
