E3 2021 is technically over, and without a show floor to showcase things, a lot of developers have missed an opportunity to spread the word about their games. Xbox has one way around this, as it bundles indie game offerings on home consoles, and now Valve is releasing its version for PC games. Steam’s latest fest, Next Fest, launches today with hundreds of demos of upcoming games to try, live streaming gameplay clips and interviews with developers if you’d rather watch than play.
From June 16 to June 22, Next Fest includes a wide range of games in a variety of genres, some of which were not highlighted during last weekend’s loose set of livestreams and keynotes at E3. Some of the notable games included in the festival are Sable, Chasing Static, Lake, Toem, and Norco.
Valve has been running these online festivals periodically since the pandemic began as a way to fill the void with in-person events like the Game Developers Conference. While it may be more of a success or failure than the big fairs at E3, Next Fest seems to be packed with interesting ideas. Plus all demos are free, so it doesn’t hurt to give any of them a course.
