Changing cases of “Delta Covid” virus in the UK, hospitalizations rising

Cases of the highly contagious delta variant Covid-19 nearly doubled in a week across the UK, with more people hospitalized.

Public Health England said on Friday the number of lab-confirmed and probable delta cases rose to 75,953 from 33,630 since the previous week. About 99% of cases sequenced and genotyped across the UK are now delta variant.

A total of 806 people were hospitalized with a delta variant as of Monday, PHE said, an increase of 423 in a week. Of the 806 patients, 527 were not vaccinated, while 84 patients received the full course of two doses.

The latest data is consistent with PHE’s analysis that two injections of the vaccines will keep about 9 out of 10 people who contract the disease out of hospital, on average. But it also makes clear that cases of Covid-19 will still emerge even when the vaccine program reaches all adults, presenting a challenge for the government as it seeks to reopen the economy.

The number of deaths with deltas will continue to increase BC:

1) Delta is now the dominant variant (91% of all cases) so the probability is that the COVID deaths are delta infection

2) Most deltas are new (88% in 28 days) so people won’t have time to get very sick and die after pic.twitter.com/lg8gkKNq5H

“We aim to live with this virus as we live with influenza,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Parliament this week.

Given the typical lag of a few weeks between initial infection and death from coronavirus, PHE cautioned that it is too early to judge the relative mortality of the delta variant compared to other strains. The majority of Delta’s confirmed cases are within the past 28 days.

Jenny Harris, chief executive of the UK’s Health Security Agency, said in the statement that the increase in cases “is primarily occurring in younger age groups, with a significant proportion of whom have not been vaccinated but are now being called upon to receive the vaccine.” It is encouraging to see that Hospitalizations and deaths are not rising at the same rate, but we will continue to monitor them closely.”
