Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is back to his old tricks.
Chavez Jr. missed his weight in a scheduled boxing match against NFL legend Anderson Silva, lifting the scales to 184.4 pounds in Friday’s 182-pound bout, which was held in Guadalajara, Mexico. Fighting MMA confirmed the news.
As a result, Chavez Jr. will give away $100,000 of his wallet to Silva, who has managed to hit the 182-pound limit. Fight Hub TV first reported on her beauty queen.
“I have been a professional in combat sports for over 20 years,” Silva wrote on Instagram. “I have always fulfilled my duties both in and out of the ring. The contractual weight for Battle of Tomorrow is 182 lbs, which I accomplished through months of hard work alongside my team. Unfortunately, my opponent came in at 184.4 lbs. Despite this, I will continue to put in a great show. To all of you “.
You can watch a video about the scale below.
This isn’t the first time the 35-year-old Chavez Jr., son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, has lost $1 million due to a weight loss of nearly five pounds in a 2019 match against Daniel Jacobs. Chavez Jr. weighed 172.7 pounds for the super middleweight match, which was contracted for 168 pounds.
Friday’s failure is just the latest in a long line of troubles that have plagued Chavez Jr’s career. The boxer has been suspended several times in the past for failing drug tests, among other things.
Silva vs Chavez Jr. is scheduled to be an eight-round match that will take place on Saturday in Guadalajara, Mexico. The card also features an exhibition match between 58-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. and Hector Camacho Jr.
Silva and Chavez Jr. will compete in 10-ounce gloves.
Silva drew 1-1 in his boxing career but last competed in 2005. Chavez Jr. holds a record 52-5-1 but has lost five of his last 11 matches.
