The top-ranked Philadelphia 76ers are one loss away from elimination, but things could have been very different entering Friday’s Game Six against the No. 5 Atlanta Hawks. After losing their second straight game by 18 points or more, they found themselves Now 3-2 behind with their season on the line and the most important game in front of them – on the road in Atlanta. After one quarter of playing at State Farm Arena, it was the Hawks who came out with a bigger card and were narrowly ahead of 76 as a result.
The Sixers are the first team in the past 25 years to lose the lead by more than 18 points in consecutive games. They dropped the Game 5 despite having a lead of 26 in the third quarter and 18 entering the fourth. Trae Young and the Hawks made the third biggest comeback in the last 25 seasons in the NBA. Joel Embiid scored 37 points, and had a big assist from Seth Curry (36 points), but Ben Simmons’ playoff streak continued as he scored only eight points and only shot 4 of 14 off the streak. He has now missed 43 free throws and is on track for his second worst free throw percentage (33 percent, 22 of 67) in the postseason.
