“We have not positively determined who this person is,” Cos County District Attorney Paul Fraser said at a news conference.
However, investigators published several surveillance photos of the suspect, but they warned people not to approach him. “We have to believe he’s armed and dangerous,” Fraser said.
Fraser said the incidents began Friday morning when two people were run over at Casino Mill in North Bend, which is on the Oregon coast, about 218 miles south of Portland.
One person died and the other is in hospital in critical condition. “She’s in really bad shape,” Fraser said.
Soon after, police received reports of a fatal shooting at the Herbal Choices Marijuana dispensary, just over a mile from the casino. Witness descriptions led them to believe that the same person was responsible for both crimes.
A description of the suspect’s truck brought the police to a trailer in an RV park next to the casino. A man believed to be the owner of the truck and trailer has been found dead inside.
“I have no doubt that this person died of fatal violence,” Fraser said, but did not reveal whether the victim was shot.
The suspect’s truck was later found along a highway in Lynn County, Oregon, northeast of the crime scene, and crashed and caught fire.
An eyewitness told the police that the driver fled the scene. Surveillance video at a sporting goods store in North Bend shows the suspect buying more ammunition before leaving the area.
Police say they had an idea of the suspect’s identity, but did not positively identify him or establish a motive.
