CHARLOTTE, NC – The mother of a 4-year-old girl whose remains were found in a North Carolina home last month forced her 13-year-old daughter to help bury her sister in the backyard, according to a search warrant.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Charlotte Mecklenburg police had charged Malika Bennett, 31, with first-degree murder, felony child abuse, bodily harm, and felony concealment of death. Bennett also has three misdemeanor child abuse counts pending as of February 2020, according to a search of public records.
Police also arrested and charged Bennett’s mother, Tammy Taylor Moffett, 53, with concealing a death and an accomplice in a murder after it occurred, according to her arrest warrant.
Officers found the body of Megelick “Gili” Young buried outside her mother’s home in Charlotte on May 21. The note accuses Migelic’s mother of forcing her to stand in the laundry room for three days as punishment for soiling her pants. The 13-year-old sister told the police that she eventually became too weak to stand, so she fell through the back door and hit her head. The girl told the police that Bennett performed CPR on the girl, but she died.
The memo said that Bennett placed Mijelik’s body in two black plastic garbage bags in the trunk of an SUV, where they remained for five days until the smell became unpleasant. Then, Bennett drove the SUV to go buy a shovel and, after digging the hole, forced the 13-year-old to pick up her sister’s body and lay it in the ground and cover it with dirt, according to the search warrant.
