President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on Saturday announced the death of Champ, a German shepherd, calling him a “dear companion” and “good boy.”

“Our hearts are heavy today as we inform you all that our beloved German Shepherd, the hero, passed away peacefully at home,” Biden said in a statement. “He has been our dear constant companion for the past 13 years and has been loved by the entire Biden family.”

President Biden’s dogs are moving into the White House

Biden brought two dogs, Champ and Major, to the White House this year. Champ has lived with the Biden family since 2008, and was reportedly named by the president’s granddaughters. Major was adopted in 2018 and is the first rescue dog to live in the White House.

Biden’s German sponsors were sent to Delaware

The two dogs returned to the White House in March after being sent to the family home in Wilmington, Delaware, on what the White House described as a pre-planned trip. This followed reports that Major had bitten a member of the White House security team and was barking and spitting at other staff members. There were no reports of bad behavior from the older champ.

In their statement, Biden described how, even with Champ’s weakness in recent months, he would pull himself up when they walked into the room, “his tail always wagging, suffocating us from ear scratches or belly rubs.”

“Wherever we were, he wanted to be, and everything was instantly better when he was next to us,” they said. “He loved nothing more than to lie at our feet by the fire at the end of the day, join us as a comfortable attendee at meetings, or sunbathe on the White House lawn.”

Previously, they said, he loved racing to catch their grandchildren running around their backyard in Delaware, chasing golf balls in the front lawn of the Naval Observatory.

“In our happiest moments and our saddest days, he was there with us, sensitive to all our unspoken feelings and affection,” they said. “We love our sweet, kind boy and will always miss him.”
