Champ, a German shepherd who helped restore the longstanding presidential tradition of keeping a pet in the White House, died Saturday.
“Champ died peacefully at home,” President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said on Twitter.
And they said, “In our happiest moments and our saddest days, he was there with us, sensitive to all our unspoken feelings and emotions.” “We love our sweet, kind boy and will always miss him.”
The Bidens’ other German shepherd, Major, began roaming the White House in January, after a four-year hiatus for pets at the Executive Residence during the presidency of Donald J. Trump.
The major was recently sent out for training after a series of biting bouts.
Andrew Hager, a historian in residence at the Presidential Museum of Pets, said Mr. Trump was the first president in more than a century who did not have a pet of any kind.
The Biden family earned a Champ in 2008 from a breeder after Mr. Biden was elected vice president, according to Politico. The Bidens named the hero pup in honor of Mr. Biden’s father, who used to tell his son, “Get up, hero” when life was tough.
Biden said Champ was a cute dog who was a nice dog who chased golf balls in the front lawn of the Naval Observatory and loved running after Biden’s grandchildren.
As he got older, he was turning at Biden’s feet in front of the fireplace.
“Even as Champ’s power waned in his final days, when we entered the room, he would immediately lift himself up, always wagging his tail,” Biden said. “Everything was instantly better when he was by our side.”
