A slight earthquake in Istanbul on Saturday caused residents to panic amid fears of a major quake, although no damage or injuries were recorded.
The country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the 3.9-magnitude earthquake, which occurred at 3:07 pm local time (12:07 pm GMT), was centered in the Kartal district on the Asian side of Istanbul.
The epicenter was 7.06 kilometers (4.38 miles) below the surface.
No injuries or damages have been reported so far, according to Minister of Nature and Urbanism Murat Kurum and Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya.
The Kandilli Seismological Observatory recorded the earthquake with a magnitude of 4.2.
Kartal is located in close proximity to the North Anatolian Fault (NAF), one of the major fault lines that intersect with Turkey.
Citizens briefly poured into the streets in the city’s Asian neighborhoods upon sensing the earthquake.
One of the most devastating earthquakes of the past year occurred in the coastal city of Izmir in October, killing more than 100 people.
