MILAN, Italy, June 19, 2021 / EINPresswire.com/ — The bright yellow jackets of Scientology’s volunteer ministers have become a symbol of help across Italy, as local Scientologists have stepped up to support their communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the country has opened up and life is back to normal, what stands out in their memory are the partnerships forged and friendships.
Italy was one of the first countries devastated by the coronavirus, and was unprepared for the strain the pandemic would place on health and social care services.
Just as medical professionals of all faiths around the world have done, Scientologists from doctors and nurses have risked their lives to save the lives of others in the nation’s hospitals. Churches of Scientology across the North of the country have activated Volunteer Ministers (VMs) to boost the overstretched resources of their cities.
Volunteer Scientology ministers and members of Pro.Civi.Co.S, civil protection volunteers in the Scientology community who are all trained, deliver food and prescriptions to at-risk neighbors and run a helpline, responding directly or by connecting callers to social networking service personnel.
Across the country, volunteer ministers in their communities are reaching out with educational brochures to help people understand how to protect themselves from the virus. They have offered offers of Stay Well brochures to local stores along with invitations to visit the online Scientology Prevention Resource Center at www.Scientology.org/StayWell which contains dozens of simple videos in 21 languages including Italian.
Volunteer Scientology ministers disinfected public spaces, health care facilities, and houses of worship. They ran COVID testing centers and monitored the flow of people into vaccination centers. They helped relieve staff fatigue in health care facilities by disinfecting rooms and providing care for the elderly.
And just before the start of the new year, when a devastating earthquake struck one of the poorest regions in Croatia, they raised donations and implemented disaster response projects to help those most affected.
The Volunteer Ministers Program at the Church of Scientology is a religious social service created in the mid-1970s by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. It constitutes one of the largest independent relief forces in the world.
With the events of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York City, Church of Scientology leader David Miscavige called on Scientologists to redouble their efforts to help their fellow men. He issued a directive called “The Wake Up Call,” which inspired an astonishing growth in the Minister’s Volunteer Program. In response, Italy’s Volunteer Ministers formed Pro.Civi.Co.S, which was entered into the National Civil Defense Registry the following year.
Over the past two decades, Italy’s Pro.Civi.Co.S and Volunteer Ministers have responded to disasters at home and abroad, including the L’Aquila and Amatrice earthquake in Italy, the 2004 South Asian tsunami, the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2019 Albania earthquake.
The mandate of the Volunteer Minister is to be “someone who assists fellow human beings on a voluntary basis by bringing purpose, truth, and spirituality back into the lives of others.” Their belief: “A volunteer minister does not close his eyes to the pain, wickedness, and injustice of existence. Instead, he is trained to deal with these things and help others achieve relief from them and a new strength of character as well.”
