Chris Paul to miss first match against Clippers due to COVID protocol

The Phoenix Suns will miss Chris Paul when the Western Conference Finals begin on Sunday.

The team announced Saturday that Paul will play Game One against the Los Angeles Clippers and remain included in the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

It is unclear when Paul will be able to return.

Paul got into health and safety protocols on Wednesday, after the Suns had already ended their previous streak against the Denver Nuggets.

The 36-year-old has not said publicly whether he has yet been vaccinated, calling it a “personal decision” in March. However, Shams Al-Shaaraniya of The Athletic said that “the urine isolation period may be shorter for the vaccinated individual” when reporting on it earlier this week.

Paul has averaged 15.7 points, 8.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds so far in the postseason for the Suns, who have made an impressive 8-2. Game one of their series with the Clippers — who beat the top-seeded Utah Jazz 4-2 in their series that ended Friday night — will take place Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET in Phoenix.
