Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has warned the United States and other countries seeking to revive the nuclear deal with Iran to “wake up” after the election of a hard-line judge as the country’s president.
Speaking at a televised cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Bennett said Ebrahim Raisi, a subject of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, would establish a “regime of brutal torturers,” Reuters reported.
said Bennett, who replaced Benjamin Netanyahu last week after the former prime minister failed to form a new government.
“A regime of brutal torturers should never be allowed to have weapons of mass destruction,” Bennett said. “Israel’s position will not change in this regard.”

Raisi, Iran’s chief justice under US sanctions for human rights abuses, took 62 percent of the vote in Saturday’s election, which was marked by an extremely low turnout — and less than half of the country’s eligible voters cast their ballots.
Bennett continued Netanyahu’s view that the United States should not join the nuclear deal that former President Donald Trump withdrew from in 2018.
The Biden administration has said it wants to resume negotiations with Iran over a return to the accord that the Obama administration brokered with world powers in 2015.
