Ten people, nine of them children, died in a 15-vehicle crash in Alabama on Saturday, bringing the state’s death toll from Tropical Storm Claudette to 12.

The Associated Press reported that the accident, likely caused by a waterslide, occurred on Interstate 65, 35 miles south of Montgomery.

Butler County coroner Wayne Jarlock said the accident involved a pickup truck from a youth farm carrying eight girls ages 4 to 17. The youth farm is operated by the Alabama Police Association and is for children who have been abused or neglected.

“This is the worst tragedy I’ve been a part of in my life,” Michael Smith, CEO of Youth Farm, told the Associated Press.

“Words can’t explain what I saw,” Smith said, after visiting the accident site. “We love these girls as if they were our children.”

A man and a 9-month-old baby died in a separate accident in a multi-vehicle pile-up, the Associated Press reports.

According to Garlock, the area where the multi-vehicle crash occurred was notorious for aquaplaning.

Sheriff Danny Bond wrote on social media: “Butler County has had one of its most horrific traffic accidents.” “I think it’s the absolute worst in our county.”

In a separate incident near Tuscaloosa, a 24-year-old man and his 3-year-old son died when a tree fell on their home.

Tropical Storm Claudette flooded much of the Mississippi Gulf Coast with up to 12 inches of rain reported in some parts of the area. Flash flood watches and tropical storm warnings were issued for Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama and Florida.
