EDEN, N.C. – The body of a fourth tuber has been found in a North Carolina river after a fatal accident in which a family floated on a recreational buoy over a dam, local officials reported Sunday.
The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a press release that Isiah Crawford, 7, was the person found in Dunn River.
Another tuber, Teresa Villano, 35, is still missing. The search for her continued on Sunday, officials said, including near the Virginia state line.
The sheriff’s office said the child’s body was found after authorities received a 911 call at around 10 a.m. someone reported seeing a body in the river near a boat landing in the city of Aden.
The accident occurred on Wednesday night when a group of nine people floated down the river on inflatable tubes and went over an embankment. Four people were rescued on Thursday, while the bodies of three tubercles were found that day.
The group passed a dam about 8 feet (2.5 meters) high next to Duke Energy Station. Boat experts told The News & Record that such low-headed dams are notorious for holding people in the strong current that rushes at their base.
Dan River Keeper Stephen Pulliam of Stoneville told The News & Record in Greensboro that he wonders if recent rains have created mud that has blocked the transfer area where boaters and tubers can get out and walk around the dam’s strong currents.
This story has been corrected to show that The News & Record is based in Greensboro, not Greenville.
