PSA: Don’t connect to this silly Wi-Fi if you see it on your iPhone

Every now and then someone discovers a strange iPhone error that blasts your phone with a random text message or a video, and we have another one. Carl Schou on Twitter discovered a very specific Wi-Fi network that will completely mess up your phone’s Wi-Fi functions.

Like the Power iMessage error a few years ago, this is not something you should worry about doing accidentally or even as a joke. It’s not clear if other network names were affected, but Schou privately connected to the SSID %p%s%s%s%s%n before his phone disconnected.

After joining my personal WiFi with the SSID “%p%s%s%s%s%n”, my iPhone permanently disabled WiFi functions. Neither rebooting nor changing the SSID fixes it :~) pic.twitter.com/2eue90JFu3

As you can see in the above tweet, network connectivity leads to a never-ending loop of disconnecting and not allowing you to connect to a network and should only be fixed with a factory reset. Schou says “Neither rebooting nor changing the SSID fixes that.” It is certainly very unlikely that it will appear in your network list even if someone is trying to mess with you. The only real way to do it as a joke is for one of your friends to change their SSID to the character string above – but they’ll also be using their own phone.

But as a PSA, don’t connect to this network if you see it showing up on your iPhone. And of course, don’t connect to any open network that appears on your phone because you may invite much bigger problems than these.
