(CNN) – Don’t worry about that shaking in Florida. It’s just a massive military explosion.

A “trial explosion” caused by the Navy about 100 miles off the Atlantic coast of Florida was recorded as a 3.9-magnitude earthquake on Friday.

Known as a “shock trial,” the blast is an explosion intended to test a ship’s ability to withstand nearby blasts.

The Navy was testing its new aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford.

These types of explosions were deliberately launched decades after the Navy discovered that nearby explosions could destroy major systems on its ships, even when they did not cause physical damage.

This is the first time the Navy has conducted shock trials since it tested the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt in 1987.

Military officials say the tests comply with environmental requirements that take into account the migration patterns of marine life.
