Las Vegas Raiders defensive lineman Karl Nessib has become the first active NFL player in history to come out as gay.
Nassib posted on Instagram: “How are you?” “I’m at my home in West Chester Pennsylvania. I just wanted to take a quick moment to say I’m gay. I’ve been intending to do this for a while but I finally feel comfortable getting it off my chest. I truly have the best life, the best family, friends, and a job any man could ask for.”
“I’m a very private person so I hope you guys know I’m not doing this for the attention. I just think acting and seeing are very important. I really hope that videos like this and the whole directing process aren’t necessary one day, but until then I’ll do my best I do my best and do my part to cultivate a culture of acceptance and empathy, and I will start by donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project. It’s an amazing organization, it’s the number one suicide prevention service for LGBTQ youth in America and they’re doing really incredible things. I’m so excited to be a part of it and help in any way I can, and I’m excited Really to see what the future holds.”
On Instagram, the changers tweeted a heart-shaped emoji (in black, which is appropriate), showing that the team supports Nassib and that their announcement was not a shocker.
Nassib, 28, is entering his sixth season in the NFL, his second with the Raiders after stints with the Browns and Buccaneers. He has 20.5 functional cysts. He played in college in Pennsylvania (where I am proud of the alum).
No openly active gay player or duo has played a regular season NFL game. There were 15 players who went out after playing, or in the case of Michael Sam in 2014, went out after being drafted but didn’t make a roster.
