If you live in an earthquake-prone area, it is important to know what to do when earthquakes strike.
Costa Rica is one of those places.
According to the National Emergency Committee (CNE), the average number of earthquakes in Costa Rica is 350 per month, or about 12 each day. You’d be hard pressed to notice the vast majority of them – you might not feel it at all, or you might mistake it for a truck rushing down the street.
But every now and then, an earthquake causes massive damage in Costa Rica. (Want a reminder? Here’s a list!)
The United States Department of Homeland Security recommends the following when an earthquake strikes:
If you are in a vehicle, stop and stop. Set the parking brake. If you are in bed, turn your face down and cover your head and neck with a pillow. If you are outside, stay away from buildings. Do not enter the entrance. Don’t run outside.
“First of all, keep calm,” says CNE in Costa Rica. If you are indoors, you can walk outside – using the stairs instead of the elevators – to an area away from damaged buildings and electrical power lines.
CNE is hosting a nationwide earthquake simulation, or exercise, at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 11 to help Costa Rica prepare for evacuations in the event of a major earthquake. The organization expects thousands of people across the country to participate in the event.
To participate in simulacro:
If you have not already registered, register by completing this form. Learn safe evacuation routes and plan an evacuation route using CNE documentation. evacuation! At 7 pm on August 11, the place was evacuated as if there was a big earthquake.
More details will be announced as the event approaches, but in previous years, individuals were encouraged to report their evacuation via the CNE simulacro app, available for iOS and Android. An online visualization of the reports was available here.
This CNE video shows the 2021 earthquake drill:
This will be the third seismic drill of this scale in Costa Rica, and the first such event of the night.
“We are conducting the third national exercise, a nightly evacuation exercise, to strengthen the country’s emergency capabilities in the context of COVID 19,” CNE says.
