Last Wednesday, Facebook announced that it would begin testing ads within Oculus Quest apps and said paid title Blaston from Resolution Games and apps from “other developers” would be the first to include them. For many Blaston fans, this wasn’t welcome news, leading to a flurry of negative reviews criticizing Resolution Games for planning to test ads in a game they paid for. Now, after the backlash, the studio has reversed course, saying that it won’t actually be testing ads inside Blaston (via UploadVR).
“We appreciate all the feedback and thoughts on testing the Oculus ad for Blaston Games and other games announced last week,” Resolution Games CEO Tommy Palm said in a statement shared with The Verge. “Some good points have been made, and we understand that Blaston is not the best for this type of ad test. Therefore, we are no longer planning to do the test in Blaston.”
While Resolution Games won’t be testing ads in Blaston, they may still be testing ads in another of their games – but it’ll be a free title rather than a paid game. “As an alternative, we’re looking to see if this temporary little test can be ported to our free game, Bait! sometime in the future,” Palm said.
“We love the field as much as we love the most passionate players,” Palm continued. “If ads in VR become as inevitable as on other platforms, we want to make sure that while we have this opportunity to start over and do it right, we do just that. We welcome any and all of your feedback along the way until We can have a constructive conversation about this and create the best path forward.”
As my colleague Adi Roberstson wrote last week, there are still some big questions about Facebook’s move to bring ads to Oculus Quest apps. Resolution Games’ transformation doesn’t make the future of advertising in Oculus apps any clearer.
