WASHINGTON (WPVI) – The White House on Monday sought to raise awareness of the federal government’s new child tax credit, which will start being paid monthly in July for families with children 17 and younger.
Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at a recreation center in Pittsburgh as part of a broader campaign to promote the program in partnership with churches, schools and other organizations.
“When more families know how they can get relief, that is how we will be able to lift our children out of poverty,” Harris said.
The administration has launched a website https://childtaxcredit.gov with details of potential recipients. As part of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package, eligible families can receive up to $3,600 for each child under six. The tax credit will be $3,000 per year for each child between the ages of 6 and 17.
Democrats in the Philadelphia area are trying to get the message across, too.
“This is the most important proposal and law to reduce child poverty in the United States since 1965,” said Congressman Brendan Boyle.
Payment must be made monthly, the first of its kind in the program. People can enroll in the program even if they don’t file their entire tax file.
The program is set to expire after one year, although Biden has suggested extending it until 2025 with the ultimate goal of making it permanent.
Do I qualify for the Child Tax Credit?
Almost all families with children will qualify. Some income restrictions apply. For example, only spouses who make less than $150,000 and single parents (also called the head of the household) who make less than $112,500 will be eligible for the 2021 Child Tax Additional Credits High-income families may receive the credit Younger or may not qualify for any credit at all. For more details on phaseouts for high-income families, see “How Much Will I Get in Child Tax Credit Payments?”
Do I need to do anything to make sure I receive my payment?
Most families will not have to do anything at all to receive the child tax credit payments. If you filed taxes this year (your 2020 tax return), filed last year (your 2019 tax return), or if you signed up for Economic Impact Payments (commonly called “stimulus checks” or “stimulus”) using the IRS’s Non- Last year’s Filer tool, you’re all set and the IRS will automatically send you monthly payments.
If you didn’t have to file your taxes this year or last year, and you didn’t register for last year’s Economic Impact Payments, you can still sign up for the Child Tax Credit payments. The good news is that through the IRS Offline Registry Tool, you can also apply for Economic Impact Payments (“stimulus checks”) that you are entitled to but may not yet receive.
When will I start receiving my monthly payments?
People who receive payments by direct deposit will get their first payment on July 15, 2021. After that, the payments will come out on the 15th of every month. (In August, your payment will come out on August 13 after the 15th falls on a weekend.) If you didn’t provide the IRS with your bank account information on your last tax return, a check will be sent to you around the same day . It’s time to get to the address that the IRS holds.
How Much Will I Receive in Child Tax Credit Payments?
Most families will receive the full amount: $3,600 per child under 6 and $3,000 per child between 6 and 17. To get the money for families sooner, the IRS will send out half of the 2021 Child Tax Credit as a monthly payment of $300 per child. Child under 6 and $250 per child between 6 and 17 years old.
This amount may vary depending on income. These people are eligible for the full Child Tax Credit:
Married couples whose income is less than $150,000. Families with one parent (also called paterfamilias) with an income of less than $112,500.
Everyone else earning less than $75,000
These people will qualify for at least $2,000 in child tax credit, which goes up to $166 per child each month:

I haven’t filed taxes in a while. How can I get this feature?
You may be eligible for child tax credit payments even if you haven’t filed taxes recently. Not everyone is required to file taxes.
This year, Americans were only required to file taxes if they earned $24,800 as a married couple, $18,650 as a head of household, or $12,400 as a single filing. If your gross income in 2020 is below those levels, you can sign up to receive payments for the Child Tax Credit each month using a simple tool for non-discharges available on the IRS website.
If you thought your income in 2020 meant you had to file taxes, it’s not too late. You can still file a return for the monthly Child Tax Credit payments in 2021, as well as the other tax benefits or refunds that you are entitled to claim. For help filing a late return, visit the IRS website.
Where will the IRS send my money?
The IRS will send your payment by direct deposit to the bank account they have on file. If they don’t have your bank account information, a check will be mailed to you.
