Las Vegas Raiders defensive line Karl Nessib made history on Monday when he became the first active NFL player to come out as gay. Nassib announced on his Instagram account, revealing that he will also donate $100,000 to the Trevor Project, a crisis support service for LGBT youth.

Nassib follows in the footsteps of former St. Louis Rams defensive line Michael Sam. Sam was the first openly gay player to be drafted when the Rams selected him in the 2014 NFL Draft. However, Sam never played in a regular season game in the NFL.

“I just wanted to take a quick moment to say I’m gay,” Nassib said in the video ad. “I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, but I finally felt comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I really have the best life. I have the best family, friends, and job any man could ask for.”

“I’m a very private person, so I hope you guys know I’m not doing this for really interesting. I just think acting and seeing are very important. I actually hope that one day videos like this and all the process are not just necessary. But even Then, I will do my best and do my part to cultivate an accepting, compassionate culture.”

After Nassib Al-Raed’s announcement, current and former NFL coaches, as well as athletes from other sports, took to social media to express their support for the defensive line player.
