NFL player Karl Nesib’s decision to become gay led to a teasing joke by Joey Behar of The View on Tuesday, which Behar later tried to undo on the broadcast.
As seen in a clip posted to Twitter by journalist Justin Baragona (embedded below), discussion of Nassib Behar’s exit prompted the comment, “After they said ‘Breach in the end zone, they lost me!'” In response, co-guest Ana Navarro jokingly put her fingers in her ears, while Sarah Haines groaned and hung her head, Sunny Houston shook her head with a smile and Megan McCain raised her eyebrows from the comment.
Later in the clip, Behar said, “I just yearn for the day you can be gay in the world, and that doesn’t become a big deal,” then backs away from her earlier jokes before throwing it into the commercial: Way, that inappropriate joke you told daytime TV ? Scratch it. Make me think I’ve never said it.”
Behar wasn’t the only media figure still while reporting on Nassib, a defensive end to the Las Vegas Raiders who appeared in a video message on Monday night. On ESPN, SportsCenter (embedded at right) incorrectly identified Share as the “first active gay player in the NFL”, rather than calling him the first active NFL player in league history to come out as gay.
Likewise, social media users criticized The New York Times on Tuesday for the headline that read: “Karl Nesib was an NFL player. Then he came out as gay.” The title appears to have since been changed, and it now reads, ” Karl Nessib, the first gay NFL player, was a soccer player for every player.”
