Cubs Empty Dodgers, MLB season record tie

LOS ANGELES — Zach Davis and three players from the Chicago Cubs combined for seventh in this year’s major, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 Thursday night and equaling the record for most in a single baseball season since 1900.

The Dodgers pulled eight walks, earned at least one from each pitcher Cubs, but couldn’t beat any other player.

Davis (5-4) issued five walks and used 94 grounds to overcome six innings against the reigning world champion in the sixteenth start of his first season with the Cubs.

Both Chicago shortstops, Ryan Tebera and Andrew Chavin walked through their only turn, but Los Angeles couldn’t capitalize.

Craig Kimbrill then walked past Chris Taylor for ninth, but fierce closeness hit Cody Bellinger, Albert Pujols and 17th discus hitter Will Smith in Cubs history – the team’s first joint effort.

“I think they all needed to be involved, just to raise my heart rate a little bit,” said David Ross, director of Cubs.

“I got ninth, I don’t know I was nervous for long with a 4-0 lead and Craig Kimbrill on the hill as I was tonight.”

Cubs player Zack Davis and three mitigators combined did not hit the Dodgers

Javier Pez came in in the first half and Wilson Contreras added a two-round shot in the sixth inning for the Cubs, who happily celebrated their first non-hitter for the franchise since last September 13, when Alec Mills ousted Milwaukee.

The seventh non-hit season of this extraordinary season was the first since May 19. The Boston Red Sox also made a joint bid in the eighth inning earlier Thursday, but lost a no-no and match in Tampa Bay.

With this – number 312 in baseball history – 2021 game 1990, 1991, 2012 and 2015 for the most in a single MLB season since 1900. That’s one shy of eight records in 1884, the first season allowed.

“This is an amazing moment,” Davis said. “The World Championship, I think something like that would probably top it off. But even though it wasn’t a solo and it was a joint effort, being a part of history is something special.”

Davis said that each of his three reducers claimed he had no idea they were working against the combined hits until after they had cast their roles.

“I think every bowler wants to keep playing, no matter how many pitches, but it worked,” Davies said. “Shafe, Tip and Craig shut the door. A piece of history. I’m excited for the guys who were on the field. I can’t complain at all.”

The Cubs have actually done something a lot harder than throwing a hitter over the past two seasons: They beat Walker Buehler, who is unbeaten in 23 consecutive regular season starts.

Buehler suffered his first loss since September 21, 2019 to the Dodgers despite throwing six innings from the five-ball. Buehler made it through six rounds for his 17th straight start, but lost his 30-game winning streak overall unbeaten.

One night after sweeping the San Diego Padres for the first time since 2013, the Dodgers overpowered the Cubs, who also won a three-game series from Los Angeles last month.

The Dodgers haven’t been targeted since August 30, 2015, when they were nullified at Chavez Ravine by Jake Arrieta of the Cubs – who is scheduled to play in Chicago on Friday night.

Davis rebounded sharply after hitting eight career games in his last game against Miami. Those eight runs matched the number he allowed in his previous six starts combined, and he regained his excellent form at Dodger Stadium.

However, Davis was still having control issues in Chavez Raven. He walked two hits in the first before making Pujols to the ground to finish the inning.

He walked in the front mixture in stages three and four, but he avoided any further trouble. The fifth inning was his first 1-2-3 frame, and the Dodgers retired in order in the sixth inning as well.

The Dodgers came close to the blow in the first half when Rafael Ortega hit Taylor’s streak driving into the center.

Davis never threw a full game in his seven-year football career, which began with five seasons in Milwaukee before moving to San Diego last year.

Tebera, the busiest loyalist on Chicago’s hard-eared yard, walked Gavin Lux with two naysayers on the seventh. Austin Barnes lined up for second to finish another blow-free round.

Chavin walked the Mookie Betts with one out, but Max Muncy hit a straight hit to first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who stomped on the bag and threw in second for an easy double.

The previous combined score was on August 3, 2019, when Aaron Sanchez and three Houston loyalists beat Seattle 9-0.

Buehler (7-1) took hitter in the eighth inning last Saturday in Arizona, where he tied the Dodgers franchise record for consecutive regular season starts without a loss. He made it through six rounds on Thursday for the 15th time this season, but has never defeated the Cubs.

Baez followed the season’s 17th teammate by putting a hand over his ear as he returned to his Chicago hideout, receiving a raucous chorus of ridicule along with cheers from the big Los Angeles Cubs fans. Buehler recovered and remained out of trouble until six, when Contreras took him deeply.

Chicago added another run in the seventh inning when Jason Hayward scored and scored on David Price’s Jake Marisnick song.
