2021 NBA Playoffs – The Phoenix Suns showed how to win by mastering the margins

In a season defined by record-breaking and turbocharged offenses, trench warfare broke out at Staples Center during Saturday’s Western Conference Fourth Round Finals between the Phoenix Suns and the L.A. Clippers. Two adept 3-point shooting teams combined to go 9 for 51 from behind the arc (17.6%) and 34.3% from the field. With the competition tightening after the traditional third-quarter rally by the Clippers, the two teams shot a 2-for-21 collective from the field to start the fourth quarter. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Clippers attempted 10 field goals in the fourth quarter — and missed all 10 goals.

In the end, the Suns outperformed the Clippers 15-14 in the final frame, enough for an 84-80 win and a 3-1 lead with the Conference Finals returning to Phoenix in Game Five on Monday (9 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN application day). In one of the deepest franchise transformations in modern NBA history, a team that hasn’t qualified for the playoffs in over a decade is now just one game away from the NBA Finals.
