The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences apologized for a mistake made during the 48th annual segment of the Daytime Emmys’ In Memoriam on Friday.

During the telecast, the Academy included an incorrect photo while trying to honor The Young and the Restless actress Margaret Ray, who passed away in November 2020 (see video below). Instead, the clip included a picture of Veronica Reed, the actress who took on the role of Mamie Johnson after Ray exited. (Mami was Y&R’s first regular African American character, which Ray played from 1980 to 1990.)

“We deeply regret this error and intend to re-sequence the sequence for subsequent digital releases once an alternate image has been appropriately licensed,” the Emmys wrote as part of Saturday’s tweet thread. “We sincerely apologize to Ray’s family – as well as to Veronica Reed, whose photo was inadvertently used instead. Each of the Daytime icons deserves better than our academy.”

According to sources, the academy is also trying to track down Ray’s proper family contact in order to further her regret.

Elsewhere at Friday’s party, ABC General Hospital led the soap opera package with six total wins, including the outstanding drama series. Among other foams, NBC’s Days of Our Lives and CBS’s The Young and the Restless captured a pair of figurines, while The Bold and the Beautiful captured one.

On the talk show front, The Kelly Clarkson Show took home three awards on Friday, including one for the host named after him. Also of note, the late Alex Trebek and Larry King were both posthumously honored in their respective categories, Outstanding Game Show Host and Media Talk Show Host.
