On Saturday night, Bruce Springsteen returned to Broadway for another of Springsteen’s Broadway shows. It was the first Broadway show to be shown to a real audience since the start of the pandemic – musicals won’t return to the Great White Way until September.
During the show, Springsteen spoke about the DWI arrest that occurred last year. This was the first time he had spoken about it publicly. (He ended up dropping the most serious charges and pleading guilty to drinking in a closed area.) After listing everything he was doing during the pandemic (new album, radio show, Barack Obama podcast), he ended with: “I got his hands tied and thrown in jail.”
“I didn’t get up one morning, get on my motorbike and say, ‘I think I’m going to jail,'” he continued, according to Rolling Stone:
Then I had to go to Zoom Court! My case was USA v Bruce Springsteen. It is always comforting to hear that the entire nation is allied against you. You managed to get involved in such a heinous act that it offended the entire damned United States! From the bridge and the tunnel, you, my rebellious, law-breaking friend, drank two shots of tequila. New Jersey, they love me there!
The rest of the show continued mostly like his other Springsteen On Broadway sets, although he directed his wife Patti Sialva for an additional duet of “Fire.” He also spoke a bit about the recent political climate at the end of the show. “We live in turbulent and worrying times,” he said. “I can’t believe I’ve seen, certainly not in my life, [a time] When democracy itself, not only who will run the show for the next four years, but the very survival of democracy itself is seriously threatened.”
It will run for Broadway shows through early September.
