Mekele is under the control of the Tigrayan rebels, according to a temporary government official

The Tigrayan militia, known as the Tigrayan Defense Forces, has been gaining momentum back toward Mekele in recent weeks, according to UN security reports. Leaders of the Tigray interim government, who are ethnic Tigrayans but are appointed by the federal government, quietly left the city last week, telling colleagues that the matter is linked to the recently completed vote in the national elections – although no vote has taken place in Tigray.
