The explosion was reported around 4 p.m. in the Farm to Market Road 2756 area near Interstate 78.

Two people were killed and three others injured in a gas line explosion Monday that occurred in an unincorporated area of ​​Collin County near Farmersville, officials said.

Princeton and Farmersville fire departments, Collin County EMS and several other local law enforcement agencies are at the site of the blast, which was reported around 4 p.m. on Farm to Market Road 2756 near Interstate 78.

According to Farmersville Police Chief, the people involved in the explosion were contractors for Atmos Energy — not actual employees of Atmos — who were servicing a gas line in the area when the explosion occurred.

It is not clear at this time the cause of the explosion.

Atmos issued the following statement on Monday afternoon:

“Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the events in Farmersville, Texas today. Out of respect for their privacy, we are not publishing any names or additional details at this point.”

“Our highly trained technicians continue to work with fire departments and emergency first responders to monitor the situation and ensure the area is safe. Our number one priority remains the safety of the public, our employees, contractors, and our natural gas distribution system.”

Officials asked drivers to avoid the area.
