Nikon is working comprehensively on a retro aesthetic with its latest Z Series mirrorless cameras. Officially called “Z fc,” the company says the new Z FC is specifically designed to evoke FM2 SLR film from the ’80s, with dedicated dials for settings like shutter speed, exposure compensation, and ISO.
This approach is similar to the Nikon DF, a retro-style full-frame DSLR camera released by Nikon in 2013. But the DF was much larger than the film cameras it inspired. The Z FC has a 20.9MP APS-C sensor (and of course no SLR mirror and prism), which means the resulting camera is more compact and looks more like something like FM2.
Beyond the looks, the Z FC is a modern camera with specs very similar to the Z50. There’s a variable-angle touchscreen, an OLED electronic viewfinder, USB-C charging, SnapBridge wireless connectivity, and of course the now-required ability to use it as a webcam. While the camera can be shot in fully manual mode using the dials, there is also a switch to operate the PASM, and you can check the aperture settings using the small LCD screen on the top panel.
The native ISO range is 100-51,200 and there is a hybrid AF system with 209 points across 87 percent of the frame. Video isn’t really a point of focus with the Z FC, unsurprisingly, but it can be shot at up to 4K/30fps.
As a Z-mount camera, the Z FC will be able to use any of the full-frame lenses that are native to cameras like the Z6 and Z7, but Nikon’s lineup of DX/APS-C lenses that can make the most of the Z FC’s compact size is still lacking. . Nikon is announcing one new prime lens today, however – a 28mm (42mm equivalent) f/2.8 that will be available in a special edition design that makes it look like an old Nikkor D lens. Nikon will also release a silver version of its 16-50mm flatbed zoom along with the Z FC, and says the DX’s 18-140mm travel zoom will be available sometime this year.
The ZFC costs $959.95 for the body only, $1099.95 for the 16-50mm silver lens, and $1199.95 for the 28mm lens. All three options in black and silver will be released in late July. Nikon is also releasing six additional color options that will only be sold through its own site.
