Earthquake hits western Cuba, causing evacuations, but no injuries

HAVANA: An earthquake hit western Cuba Tuesday morning, authorities said, prompting the evacuation of several buildings but no damage or injuries reported.

The emergency service said on Twitter that the earthquake, which was felt by people in Havana, saw a number of high-rises evacuated as a precaution, and urged people to “remain calm”.

The US Geological Survey reports that a 4.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) near Candelaria in Pinar del Río province, about 70 kilometers west of Havana.

The Cuban seismograph said it had a magnitude of 5.1, adding that it was the fourth earthquake to hit the island this year.

She added, “There were no material damages or injuries.”

Rafael Rodriguez, 34, described sitting with a friend in Havana when “the chair started moving, and the curtain, too. I was so scared that I walked out” of the building.

Yuanque Garcia, 41, a resident of the capital, told AFP that she and others “immediately left the building and went down the stairs.”

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the region in January 2020, triggering a brief tsunami warning and forcing evacuations in Havana and Miami, but no casualties or damage.
