DETROIT — Many parents are wondering when the COVID vaccine will be available for children under 12 years old.
Vaccines may be available to those age five or older as early as this fall. Pfizer and Moderna are testing their vaccines on children.
Pfizer plans to enroll 4,600 children ages 5 to 11 in the United States, Finland, Poland and Spain. Daimo Gregory Kradic is 9 years old. His mother, father and 13-year-old brother Ezra were vaccinated.
“When I heard that Ezra got his vaccine, I was excited about him, but sad that I couldn’t get vaccinated and still had to wear that sticky, smelly, disgusting mask,” Gregory Kraddick said.
Gregory Kradec is part of the Pfizer vaccine trial at Children’s Hospital Colorado. When his family learned of the trial, his father said they registered him without hesitation.

Dr Payal Kohli said the children on trial play an important role.
“Now we have the delta variant. We now have all these aggressive variants and we don’t know the long-term effects of having these types of variants at a young age,” Kohli said.
Gregory Kradec doesn’t know if he got the real vaccine or the placebo, but he should get his second dose soon. Even if it was a placebo, they would be among the first to receive the actual vaccine once it is approved.
