A famous structural engineer says several factors may have contributed to the collapse of a building in Florida

Multiple factors may have been behind the tragedy, said the structural engineer hired by Surfside, Florida to inspect the site of the 12-story Champlain Towers South tower collapse on Tuesday.

“I feel very relieved that we will be able to discover, perhaps not a single cause, but two or three things that contributed and/or caused this failure,” Allen Kilsheimer, who has investigated other disasters such as the Oklahoma City Federal Building in 1995 and the World Trade Center bombing In 1993, according to CNBC’s “News with Shepherd Smith” program.

“What we’re looking for is the trigger that caused the building to collapse and then we see how things that might not have been perfect could have contributed to that collapse,” Kilsheimer added. He is the founder of KCE Structural Engineers in Washington, DC

Two months before the 12-story Champlain Towers South collapsed, the condo master sent a letter to residents warning them of structural problems. She noted that “concrete deterioration” in the building’s garage and elsewhere was “accelerating” and that damage had “significantly worsened” since the inspection three years ago. In a 2018 inspection, the engineer found pillars, beams, cracked walls in the parking garage, and “significant structural damage” under the pool.

As of Tuesday evening, 12 people were confirmed dead, and the fate of 149 others are still missing.

Kelsheimer told host Shepherd Smith that he still had no working theory as to what caused the breakup.

“The bottom line is that in a situation like this, there are a detailed number and a plethora of things that you have to consider, and it takes a long time to get enough information to do all that, and we just have that process started.”
