The animal control officer responded to the house, but the cobra seemed to have slipped away. Authorities say the cobra zebra belongs to a neighborhood resident.

Police said Tuesday morning that the cobra is still at large and can spit and bite if trapped.

According to the African Snake Institute, spitting cobras can “bite and prey on people, and facilitate injecting venom.” Nocturnal snakes found in Namibia and Angola are black to brown with light crossed bars, and an average length of 4 feet.

Under North Carolina law, “it is unlawful for any person to possess, possess, use, transport, or trade in any venomous reptile that is not in a strong, secure container.”

Police did not say whether the owner of the snake would face any charges.

If a zebra spotted a cobra, they would be told to stay away from the snake and call 911 immediately.
