Swedish carmaker Volvo on Wednesday unveiled a new electric vehicle concept that showcases the future design direction of its lineup as it moves to offer exclusive electric vehicles by 2030.

The car, dubbed “Concept Recharge,” has a sleek exterior with a streamlined interior, reminiscent of newer Tesla vehicles but with two screens instead of one. It’s a similar approach on the inside to the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover that’s been well received by Ford Motor Company.

The car’s exterior features updated headlights, Volvo’s signature logo on the front, large “L”-shaped taillights and a glass roof. It also features mid-car-opening suicide doors, a common design for model vehicles that rarely go into production models due to ergonomics and safety concerns.

While unveiling the car online on Wednesday, Volvo managers described the design as “less but better,” a cornerstone of Scandinavian design. It was revealed as part of a technology event for the company.

“Our Concept Recharge is a statement of the all-electric future for Volvo Cars, as well as a new type of vehicle,” said Robin Page, Head of Design at Volvo, in a statement. “It showcases new, modern dimensions that go hand in hand with increased versatility and demonstrates what technology can enable in terms of design.”

The concept features Luminar’s integrated lidar system, which officials said will be standard on all of the company’s next-generation electric vehicles.

Lidar technology, such as Luminar’s Iris system, is expected to greatly increase vehicle safety and be essential for autonomous vehicles to “see” their surroundings. Lidars, or light and range detection systems, can sense surroundings and help cars avoid obstacles. They use light to create high-resolution images that provide a more accurate view of the world than just cameras or radar.

Volvo is expected to unveil its first new generation of electric cars, the successor to the current Volvo XC90 SUV, next year. It will be the first new electric car since the company, which is owned by China’s Geely, announced its plans earlier this year to become an all-electric car manufacturer by 2030.

Volvo has not released the expected EV range and performance specifications for the concept vehicle. Automakers typically build concept vehicles to gauge customer interest or show the future direction of a vehicle or brand.
