We love our half inch pneumatic drive wrenches

Ingersoll Rand

Cordless power tools continue to improve, but they are still far from matching the raw torque of pneumatic pressure switches. That popular brr-BRR that rings from tire stores and NASCAR pits is not dead yet.

While cordless power tools allow for convenience, air tools don’t mess with power. We’re talking unmatched nut-breaking torque, saving you time and frustration. In this list, we spoke to the experts from Car and Driver about the half-inch pneumatic drive wrenches they use and recommend. We’ve also searched Amazon for some top-rated options – you’ll have no excuse to leave your toolbox without them.

So, if you want to play with the pros, pick up one of these wrenches to pair it with your air compressor and let the Lug Nut Anthem ring from your garage. Brr-BRR, baby!

Air Wrench 2235 TiMAX

Ingersoll Rand is one of my favorite brands of air tools, and the keys to its impact are bread and butter. The 2235 TiMAX delivers excellent performance and durability – the two most important attributes you want in an air tool. IR claims to make 1,350 lb-ft of torque from a nut-breaker, yet it only weighs 4.6 pounds. If you plan to use the air pressure switch daily, this is one of the best options.

Impact Wrench 1150 ‘Killer Torque’

The Aircat is right there with Ingersoll Rand in the upper echelons of its air-powered wrench, and you can’t go wrong with the 1150. The Aircat states that this wrench produces 1,295 lb-ft of loosened torque and 900 lb-ft of maximum torque. It’s also surprisingly quiet at just 86 decibels.

Super Duty Thunder Gun wrench

The Ingersoll Rand prides itself on its status as the official power tool of NASCAR, and the Thunder Gun makes these noises we love so much. This is basically a monolithic version of the one used for drilling, but it’s much more usable for us mere mortals. IR lists performance at 625 lb-ft of reverse torque at 10,000 rpm. This last number creates the iconic screaming noise, so, from an aesthetic point of view, this is the best option.

Air Impact Wrench XT002000

Campbell Housefield

$118.43

This Campbell Hausfeld pneumatic pressure switch is a great budget choice. It may not have the reputation of an IR or an Aircat, but it will still get the job done. CH claims it makes 750 pound-feet of nut-breaking torque, which is certainly respectable, and the ergonomic grip is designed to reduce fatigue.

Air Impact Wrench 231C

This classic IR pick is an inexpensive, no-frills effect that can be used daily or once in a while. Comes out of the box fully lubricated and ready to roll. IR claims it produces 600 lb-ft of torque and weighs 5.8 pounds. With an RPM of 8000, you’ll be spinning bolts in no time.

Earthquick XT . air impact wrench

central antenna

124.97 USD

For the ultimate pick in performance and affordability, look no further than the Earthquake XT. Recommended for use when required by the vehicle and driver, this impact wrench packs a punch. Separate torque jumps the claimed 1,190 lb-ft, and the 90 decibel rating won’t bleed your ears. Longevity may become an issue, which is why we do not recommend this for daily use. But for weekend warriors, it’s hard to beat.

Highly compact impact wrench

Short power tools come in handy more often than you think. With the ability to get into tighter areas without sacrificing a lot of strength, they can be a lifesaver. The IR short width is a great option, featuring 450 lb-ft of reverse torque while a plumage weighs 2.4 lbs.

short impact wrench

Chicago Aero

$123.84

The Chicago Pneumatic’s half-inch short drive wrench is a budget-friendly option, with performance listed at 450 lb-ft of torque and a weight of 2.9 lbs. This might not be the prettiest effect on this list, but if you need power in a small space without hurting your wallet, the CP short is a great option.
